Getting A Pasport for the first time can be confusing, especially if you have no idea where to start. Don’t worry though, because we’ll be providing you with all the basic information you need to apply for a US passport. We’ll keep it as simple as possible, so read on and learn all about it.

The first thing you need to do when applying for a passport is to complete the passport application form, called the Form DS-11. This is the type of form filled in by first-time applicants, as well as those whose passports were lost or stolen, applicants under 16 years old, and those who had a change of name, among other instances. And because you are a first-time applicant, you would need to appear personally to the passport agency’s office.

There are special requirements to obtaining a Pasport that need to be met by applicants who are minors, those under 18 years old. For minors under the age of 16, you will be required to appear personally along with your parents or guardians. You must also show proof of your citizenship, as well as a proof of your relationship with your parents or guardians.

Meanwhile, if you are 16 or 17 years old, there are also special requirements you need to fulfill. Some of these special requirements include a photocopy of the ID that you will present when you apply for your passport, as well as a written copy of parental consent. Make sure you have these requirements ready before you apply.

For applicants 18 years old or older, you wouldn’t need any of these special requirements. All you need is to fill up your DS-11 form along with the other documents that are normally required of all passport applicants. Keep in mind you shouldn’t sign the completed form unless you are told to do so.

Now, where do you get a copy of the DS-11? You may fill it out online, or you could download the form at the US Department of State’s website, then fill it in by hand. We advise though, that you apply for a passport online, as this saves you time. Once you’ve done so, submit the DS-11 along with the necessary documents to the passport agency or acceptance facility.

Processing your passport application takes a little bit of time. Currently, we’re talking about a four to six week processing period. What if you need to travel in less than four weeks? You have the option of having your passport application expedited. Expedited passport applications enable you to get your passport in less than two weeks if you need to travel to another country or in four weeks if you need the passport to obtain a foreign visa.
