Cochin, also known as Kochi, is a tropical paradise of waving palm trees and sandy beaches. It is located in the Indian state of Kerala, which is a strip of coastal territory in the south of India that stretches down the Western Ghats, and reaches up to the Arabian sea.

Cochin is comparatively cleaner and calmer than many Indian tourist destinations. Actually, you could easily mistake the feel and look of the place for a small, traditional European city. The influence of the British, Dutch and Portuguese, who all ruled there at one time or another, is still noticeable in many aspects of life, such as architecture, infrastructure, language, and social attitudes.

It is a religious place, and people who live there have varied ethnicity. You will find Christians, Muslims, Hindus and Jews living in harmony and celebrating all festivals enthusiastically. All places of worship are present (churches, mosques, temple and synagogues), and you will come across some fantastic examples of them, with colorful and interesting histories.

Cochin’s most famous landmark is a set of ancient Chinese fishing nets at harbor. These fishing nets are hundreds of years old, yet they are still in full operation today. Not only can you watch the fishermen at work, you can also join in and help them should you wish to do so. There are, of course, lots of other worthwhile sights there too, more than enough to occupy you for a week or two.

The coastline that extends from Cochin has some of the best beaches in the whole of India. The coconut lined sands and clear blue sea, make for a really sensenational and idylic backdrop for you take in whilst you relax. They are unspoilt too, as there are typically just a handful of beach huts and restaurants lining the shores, meaning that you can enjoy the surroundings pretty much as nature created them.

As for where to stay, Cochin was one of the first places in India to pioneer the concept of homestays, which provide a much needed source of extra income to local people, while at the same time giving you a chance to experience the real Cochin. With homestay accommodation, you live at the home of a local family, who will show you around and help you arrange tours and activities.

The Island Hideaway of Bangaram island resort is some two hundred miles from Kerala to the south west of India in the Arabian Sea, and is an example of the Lakshadweep Islands. Routinely it is accessed by a flight from Cochin to Agatti, then onward by boat for a ninety minute ride. Getting onto the boat at Agatti is an experience in itself, as you get onto a raft, and then they tow you out to the boat!! You instantly feel this is a true hideaway holiday, and your tropical island resort is going to be slightly different. Take good advice and fly Kingfisher and not Indian Airlines for reliability.

It is the perfect romantic honeymoon getaway, a lush green empty island covered in coconut groves, and shaped like a teardrop. It is encircled by pristine white sand and a big lagoon, and is part of a coral atoll with another three islands, all of which can simply be reached form Bangaram, by outboarding, sailing or rowing, kayaking or windsurfing if you find the necessity to be energetic.

It is the way the way the Maldives were before mass tourism arrived, because the coral reefs are on fire with color and packed with fish because now they are comparatively unexplored.

If you need a tropical vacation on an island hideaway, or a romantic honeymoon getaway, then Bangaram could be your ideal destination or as an element of a package including time in the Kerala part of India.

You need to grasp this island hideaway, while good for a romantic honeymoon getaway, or for people who want to play at being castaways, it is not at all for folks attempting to find luxury. If you need the accoutrements of a five star resort, just don’t go.

Bangaram itself consists of 30 huts which includes a number of family sheds in twin/double cottages. There are no televisions, telephones or air-conditioning, and to complete the island getaway feeling there are no papers so you will be fully out of effective contact with the strains of the modern world. Each hut is tiled, on the beach, and has a palm thatched veranda, ensuite lavatory, ceiling fan and a refrigerator. The accommodation is straightforward but comfy, but please note there’s no hot water!!

The epicentre of Bangaram Island resort is the restaurant shed that has been built around a central pole and made of bamboos and palm fronds. The food at the resort for lunch and dinner is a bit Indian, and a bit Continental, and terribly much seafood based. The food is with no exceptions outstanding.

Breakfast includes cereals, eggs, Indian dishes and a large amount of fresh fruit.

At night there is a barbecue on the beach, and the opportunity to eat outside overlooking the moon shining on the lagoon Bangaram Island resort is the last place where alcohol is permitted in the Lakshadweep Islands, and the beach bar is the centre of the evening activity. It serves beer and cocktails and will remain open till the guests have had enough!!.
