More than the usual – this is how the Philippine is positioned in the tourism block. The country is an archipelago and known officially as the Republic of the Philippines. This archipelago is located in Southeast Asia and holds the distinction of being one of only two predominantly Christian countries in Asia. East Timor is the other country. There are around 7,107 islands in the country and these islands host around 90 million people. This population based on 2008 estimates makes the country as the 12th most populous country in the world. For the traveler interested to know more about the country, it should be learned that the country has around 11 million overseas Filipinos worldwide and these are the Filipinos who work in other countries and one of the main reasons why the economy of the country is competitive.

Based on 2008 estimates, the gross domestic product or the GDP of Philippines is hooked at over US$ 327.2 billion and this is considered as the 37th largest in the world. The name ‘Philippine‘ traces a long history. The name was taken after the name of King Philip II of Spain in the 16th century. It was the initiative of Ruy Lopez de Villalobos to use the name Las Islas Filipinas or the Philippine Islands as his name for the islands Leyte and Samar. And the utilize of this name was based and in honor of the Prince of Spain. An additional assessment of the name ‘Philippine’ will reveal that this has Greek roots and according to some historians this was the name of the father of Alexander the Great.

The country is divided geographically into three groups:
– Luzon
– Visayas
– Mindanao

And these three major island grouping is then sub-divided into 17 regions, another 81 provinces and 136 cities. The country also plays host to 1,494 municipalities and 41,995 barrios. The government also controls Sabah, North Borneo as asserted by Section 2 of the Republic Act Number 5446. Ecologically, the country is known as one of those countries which feature diverse flora and fauna. This feature of the country is one of the major reasons why the archipelago is one of the favorite places for travelers who seek to experience nature at its best. Another main reason why the country is always part of the list of preferred travel destinations is that the country is rich in natural resources and its scenic spots are panoramic and ready to comfort and to overwhelm the first-time visitors. The natural resources of the country are extensive and this can be seen in many areas like agriculture, forestry and minerals.

Talking about the archipelago is not complete without talking about its fertile and arable lands, the forests that host diverse flora and fauna and the panoramic coastlines. For those travelers willing to sample what the country has to offer over a limited amount of time, it is suggested that the interested traveler should focus on its culture, its beaches and its heritage. The unique Philippine culture will let the traveler experience the many festivals in the country- from Sinulog in Cebu to the Penafrancia Festival in the Bicol Region. The country has a number of festivals and these festivals will usually peak during April and May- the time for the country’s fiestas. Most of these festivals have links to the church and religious in nature.

Visiting the country without visiting some of its finest beaches is not suggested. Philippines is made up of 7,107 islands and with a coastline that is twice the length of United States, you can really expect that Philippines has indeed some of the best beaches in the world. Mere mention of the Philippine will remind images of white and fine beaches of Boracay, Palawan and some of the more not-so commercial yet striking sands of other beaches. Some names that should be part of the plans of the traveler include Pagudpud, Mactan Island and Panglao. And speaking of heritage, the country is home to Ifugao Rice Terraces which is now part of the UNESCO Heritage List in 1995. Aside from this rice terraces, Philippine also plays host also to many old churches- baroque churches in Metro Manila and these are all considered as heritage sites that carry the country’s culture and history.

Arrival at Amanpulo in the Philippines actually starts before you ever get there!!

You are taken on arrival at Manila airport to the private Aman lounge prior to boarding the hotels own non-public twin prop aircraft which flies you directly to the resort.  That’s some style!!

the 1st thing that happens on arrival is that you are given the grand tour of the resort, then was taken to your ‘casitta’/banda/villa.

We were lucky enough to have a beach casitta, which stood only a short path away from what was nearly our own non-public beach, and what a beach.  Imagine white talcum powder as far as the eye can sea, backed by the most beautiful shades of turquoise and pale blue and green sea.  I presumed I’d seen the finest beaches in the world in the Seychelles – not so!!

The casita has wall to wall windows, so the views of the water are completely spectacular.

there is a king sized bed, a massive toilet with dressing area, separate shower and tub, all just A1.

Outside there’s a large sun deck with 2 day beds and a hammock, and all totally private.

You can add to this the most beautiful cotton robe for lying around in, amazing fluffy towels, toilet products, and fresh fruit each day.

After all that it comes as barely a surprise to discover that the nosh was another feature of Ananpulo.  There’s an a la carte menu, daily specials, and in fact whatever you would like the chef will cook, and you can eat anywhere just about at any time.  A gastronomic paradise!!

particularly notable was the beach club paella, and the B.B.Q.s.

This isn’t a resort for folk who have to be entertained, with many activity being on or under the water, and then naturally there is the beach!!

potentially the outstanding thing of all, was the incredible subtle and classy quality of service, rendering Amanpulo as one of the best resorts anywhere.

Most Filipinos would love to hear from their relatives or friends from the US.  Who won’t?  There’s just such a lot to tell and burning the lines would be one helluvah understatement if you are to make an international call to the Philippines.  This is because the Philippines is one of the most eventful places in the world right now.  See the news to prove this.

Placing a world call could be a particularly wallet-pinching endeavor.  But this should not always be the situation.  There are countless ways to make a long distance call, particularly if the destination of your call is the Pearl of the Orient, the Philippines.

here’s a rundown of proposals on a way to make that international call to the Philippines without shelling out much of your hard-earned dollars.

one.  Watch out when buying call cards.

many pre paid phonephone cards have hidden charges.  There could be a connection fee that would be about tantamount to getting ripped off especially when the card buyer makes a call and either the call is routed to a voice mailbox or to an ansaphone.  Connection fee deduction is mechanically done even when the caller did not say anything yet.

Other telephone card hidden charges include service fee, maintenance fee, access number and long speaking fee.  The expiration date should also be checked.

2.  Know what kind of phone will receive your call.

it will not be smart to make a long distance call to any portable gadget.  The reason being because most of overseas carriers implement the’calling party pays’ system.  The tariff rate of an international wireless telephone may be a lot higher compared against a call made to a land-line in the same country.

three.  Say no way to a telephone operator.

When you elect to be aided by a telephone operator when placing an international call, you opt to pay significantly more .  Whenever possible choose to employ a dial-around service or dial direct.

4.  Join up to a prepaid long distance plan.

Various carriers offer this type of service to people who frequently place long distance calls.  Opt for those with flexible programs.  These plans work like phone cards but do not have fees and charges related to prepaid phonephone cards.  They usually have awfully low domestic and world rates 24/7 and call quality is generally wonderful.  One more thing about these pre-paid plans is the benefit of being able to use them when placing calls from any telephones be it cell telephones or public telephones.

five.  Calling during non-business days or off-peak time will help you save.

Make the most out of these privileges by checking on what your carrier offers.  Just make sure that it won’t be too much of an inconvenience to the recipient of your call.

six.  Bad connections should be observed.

Bad connections occur and the Philippines isn’t an exception to this bother.  When this occurs, take note of the time and the number you called.  Prepaid calling cards barely gives you credit for bad connections.  But if you made a global call using a standard long distance carrier, or pre-paid long distance plans, better check if you could be given credit for that call.  They always do.

it would help if you print this info to be always reminded of the Do’s and do not’s when it comes to making an international call.

With these easy tips, you do not need to worry when your phonephone bill arrives.

ultimately, here’s the step by step process in calling the Philippines.

a.  Dial 011, which is the world code

b.  Then, key in the Philippines’ country code, which is 63.

c.  Now, dial the town area code where your your wife and youngsters are.

Here are the major cities in the Philippines with their respective city area codes :

Angeles Luzon – 455

Bacolod – 34

Baguio – 74

Cebu – 32

Clarkfield, Pampanga – 45

Dagupan, Pangasinan – seventy five

d.  Finally, dial the remaining digits.

Also, don’t forget to greet your Filipino friend using her native language. ‘Kumusta’, recounted as’cooh-moose-TAH’ surely will never fail to make her grin.
