The Canarian island of Lanzarote is one of the few European destinations that already have several green credentials under its belt. Whilst this may surprise some visitors, there are several good reasons why this is the case, due largely to the island’s climate and position.

To begin with, its location only four hours flight from the United Kingdom means that it is half the distance and therefore half the fuel consumption, of the Caribbean. And it can vie with tropical islands for all year round good weather, with an average of only twenty days rainfall per annum and day time temperatures of approximately 20º Celsius even in mid winter.

Even the Lanzarote holiday villas make a contribution to reducing the eco footprint of the island.

Across the island many of the apartments and villas on Lanzarote already use solar panels to produce heated water for their swimming pools. Whilst larger consumers of water, such as the island’s two golf courses, use recycled liquid to ensure that demand on the desalination system is kept to a minimum. Wind power is also popular, with several large turbines generating a proportion of the island’s electricity and smaller turbines used individually.

Whilst most villas in Lanzarote actually run on more conventional sources of energy, there are several which work entirely on these alternatives, and as a result can claim an excellent green pedigree. And as the technologies continue to improve, more residents are choosing to use wind and solar power.

But it isn’t just power generation that makes Lanzarote an environmentally sound tourist destination. As the island has also developed its resorts and attractions in ways that minimise the impact on the scenery and surroundings thanks to the vision and resourcefulness of the internationally renowned artist and architect Cesar Manrique.

These factors combined have turned Lanzarote into an ideal holiday destination for the environmentally conscientious. There are even several places to stay that run entirely on solar and wind energy, as these alternative sources of power have gained in popularity and effectiveness in recent years.  Making eco holidays in Lanzarote a reality.

Planning a holiday in Lanzarote during 2010?  The fourth largest of the Canary Islands offers a host of great beaches and wonderful weather all year round.  As well as a whole raft of colourful fiestas and festivals.

Anyone planning to visit the island during 2010 will find a wealth of different accommodation options.  With good quality Lanzarote villas and hotels available in all of the main three resorts, as well as across the countryside.

Lanzarote car hire is also very affordable, making it so simple to get around and take pleasure in festivals that are going on during this spectacular period.

The year kicks off in style with the Canarian Music Festival.  A prestigious event that is staged across the entire island in the archipelago, offering visitors the opportunity to enjoy some of the best classical music sounds around.  With Lanzarote playing host to performers such as The Prague National Chamber Theatre Orchestra.

Things then really start to hot up in February as Carnaval gets underway across the island.  With thousands of revellers donning colourful costumes and work pretty much grinding to a halt for a couple of weeks.  With events taking place at different times across Lanzarote.

Carnaval is staggered – so it takes place in different towns and resorts on different days.  The biggest and best events take place in the island capital of Arrecife and the oldest resort on the island of Puerto del Carmen. Where huge decorated floats and marching batacuda drum bands beat out a frenetic rhythm. Attracting thousands of residents and tourists alike – with many donning colourful costumes and partying late into the night.

During May Lanzarote becomes the venue for one of the toughest triathlons in the world.  As the annual Iron Man contest returns.  Featuring over a thousand competitors who are all battling it out for the top prize of a slot in the grand final in Hawaii.  Over a course that includes a 2km swim, 180km bike ride and a full marathon.  Which is staged along the Avenida de las Playas in Puerto del Carmen.

Corpus Christi is one of the most important events in the Catholic calendar and is celebrated on the eighth Thursday (or 60 days) after Easter, which will be the 3rd of June in 2010.  On Lanzarote it is marked with carpets created from multi coloured salt – with different municipalities all competing to come up with the most imaginative and high impact design.  The best of which cane be viewed in the capital of Arrecife or the historic town of Teguise.

Sightseeing on Lanzarote in the Canary Islands

Lanzarote is a popular holiday island, located in the Canaries.  Which are the seven strong Spanish owned island group situated off the coast of West Africa.  On the same line of longitude as parts of Mexico and the Bahamas.  Enabling visitors to enjoy great weather whatever the time of the year. This wonderful weather has helped the Canaries to become the second most visited holiday destination in Spain.  With over 1.5 million tourists enjoying their holidays in Lanzarote – the fourth largest of the islands – over the course of last year alone.

So lets have a look and see why winter holidays in Lanzarote have become so popular and choosing one of the Lanzarote holiday villas that the island offers is becoming an increasingly popular holiday accommodation  choice amongst holiday makers.

Lanzarote has a unique character and charm.  And is much drier, more arid and barren than the other seven islands.  Thanks to the fact that it experiences very little in the way of rainfall and boasts a volcanic terrain created by years of violent eruptions during the 1730´s.

This volcanic region – called Timanfaya – was declared a national park back in 1974 – and dominates the island’s interior.  It’s also the most popular sight on Lanzarote thanks to its incredible lunar like scenery.  Which in the past has earned the region a number of starring roles in major movie productions.  Most recently Broken Embraces starring Penelope Cruz, the latest release from Spanish director Pedro Almodovar.

Lanzarote´s tourist industry has been operating for over forty years so there are plenty of god quality places to stay.  Ranging from cheap apartments through to luxurious Lanzarote villas and hotels.  With most of the accommodation located in the three main tourist resorts of Costa Teguise, Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca.  Demand for rural holidays has also started to grow over the last few years.

There are over ninety beaches for visitors to explore.  Many of these are man made in the resorts – using sand imported from the Sahara.  So tourists should head for coastal villages such as Famara and Arrieta to experience the best all natural stretches of sand on the island.

Many first time visitors are surprised by the wide range of cultural attractions on offer too.  After all isn’t this supposed to be Lanzagrotty?  There’s an abundance of fascinating museums, such as the Emigration Museum which charts what happened to islanders after the volcanic eruptions as they fled to create new lives abroad.  A wealth of historic towns such as Teguise – the island capital until 1852.  And the various works of the local artist Cesar Manrique – who had a huge influence on the development of tourism on Lanzarote.

Top Resorts in Lanzarote

Lanzarote is one of the most popular holiday destinations in the Canaries.  And boasts three main resorts – along with the emerging Millionaires Marina at Puerto Calero.  Which now boasts a couple of luxurious hotels as well as a host of good quality restaurants and shops.

Each resort has its own history, character, attractions and plus points. With all of them offering high standards of accommodation and boasting an excellent selection of Lanzarote villas and hotels.

So some of the favourite holiday resorts offering a wide choice of Lanzarote apartments.

Puerto del Carmen

Puerto del Carmen started life as La Tiñosa before becoming Lanzarote´s most popular holiday destination during the 1970´s.  Thanks to an abundance of good value holiday apartment complexes…  Accommodation choices have evolved along with the resort and visitors can now select from a wide range of hotels and holiday villas too.

Puerto del Carmen is an ideal location for all types of holiday makers.  As the resort is perfect for families with young children. Thanks to the fine quality of the resort’s blue flag beaches.  Whilst also offering lots of child friendly attractions such as the Rancho Texas Theme Park – which offers kids an abundance of Wild West themed fun and games.

Costa Teguise Villas and Apartments

Situated just fifteen minutes north of Lanzarote´s international airport at Arrecife Costa Teguise was initially designed as the island’s upmarket resort.  And during the 1980´s it proved very successful at attracting moneyed visitors from countries such as Germany, Sweden and Denmark.

Costa Teguise´s excellent beaches and wide open plan feel helped to establish this as the second most popular spot on the island during the 1980´s.  But that crown slipped somewhat during the 1990´s as the resort rival of Playa Blanca was developed at the southern end of the island.  However it still remains an attractive destination and there’s plenty of hotels and holiday villas in Costa Teguise for visitors to choose from.

Playa Blanca

Playa Blanca was developed much later than the other resorts during the 1990´s.  Quickly establishing itself as the second most popular holiday destination on the island.  Thanks to its great beaches and splendid microclimate.  A factor that becomes especially salient during the winter months.

There are three main beaches within the resort itself in the form of Playa Dorada, Playa Flamingo and Playa Blanca.  Whilst the famously picturesque coves and bays of Papagayo are around a fifteen minute walk away from the town centre.

Tapas and TEFL Spain courses come together as one

There’s so much to do in Madrid, including sitting comfortably in the plazas watching the sun descend. For me, being a TEFL graduate for two months, the lead up to the night’s fun is top of the list. The bookends of the night are ca?as and tapas. Introducing: ‘ca?as and tapas’. This mix can of course be indulged in at any time…

The very greatest bites to eat I have experienced in Madrid have come with ca?as. These small, delightful in quantity, beers are the beginning to a great night or a lazy Sunday afternoon. Whatever you choose, great tapas is forever involved.

My first ca?a and tapas experience was in Plaza de Espana, just off Grand Via in a very loud, typically Spanish tapas joint. You cannot sit down, which is nowhere as nasty as it sounds. The bar is great to lean on and makes a useful beer ordering point. The bar staff were very funny, always inclined to help and recommend different dishes. The starter dish they bring is fried chip potatoes served with a delightful oily, garlic sauce. With this were three small chorizo sausages. My spanish companion and I are keen to start. This garlic sauce is one that should be experienced with friends, not first dates. It was magnificient. The chorizo was great, completely melt-in-the-mouth and making me want get more! Another ca?a, another tapa. The next dish was baby squid in a completely delicious tomato sauce. Loving my decision to come to Madrid and indulge in everything it has to offer, we finished our squid and beer. Another beer, another plate of food. Next we choose some salami – yum.

Plaza de Espana is really fantastic for finding tapas bars. It has long side streets that have a whole host of cervecias that have their own specialities. But be aware that the closer you go to Gran Via, the pricer things become. Plaza de Espana is a happy mix of quintessential Madrid and Spanish bustle. For 3 ca?as each and therefore 3 plates of tapas with our drinks, the bill came to a heroic €7. So why didn’t we make a night of it? Simple reason being because the other bars in the area are just as tempting!

I could not stay much longer, I had to go hom and lesson plan. Reaching home after a rather dizzy ride on the Madrid metro I settle down to put my TEFL qualification to good use and start to plan my business English lessons. Content on ca?as and full on tapas, I settled down easily. What another brilliant evening! I’m excited for the next time I eat out in Madrid!

Is Walking Really That Relaxing?

Many people choose to go walking on their holidays whether that is on one of those Galapagos holiday or one of the big walking holidays people seem to absolutely love it! Are there any good reasons behind all of this or are these people just out of their minds?

The Air

The air that you are breathing it has a lot to do with how stressed you are and going away to a higher place could certainly be something worthwhile.

Basically most people will go to a higher place when they are out on a walking holiday and as everyone will know that the higher you are the cleaner the air is so walking up those mountains may feel like it’s a bit bad on the lungs but in fact it is really just giving them a good clean out for you which if your like me is well needed. I will say that if you are a smoker you will struggle with this, I am not but one of my friends I went with is a heavy smoker and the first couple of days were very harsh on him.

This is just one of the many reasons and there are so many others out there.

Of course there are other options out there for you and you could take the whole family on one of those family activity holidays. This is something well worth doing as everyone in the family can get a bit of exercise and have a laugh at the same time.

So whether it is just you and your partner, the whole family or of course a load of mates that are wanting to go on one of these holidays I can certainly say that it is well worth it indeed!
