UK and US teachers are sent for overseas assignments for teaching English to people from other countries. In order to address any medical emergencies during the overseas stay, they need to buy a suitable international travel health insurance policy. The duration of the trip abroad depends on the assignment which may be for a few months or extend to a year or more.

Long term or short term international health insurance plans can be purchased by these teachers based on the duration of the assignment abroad. Accordingly, the coverage benefits and validity varies depending on the insurance company as well as the international insurance policy purchased by the individual.

International short term medical insurance plans can be purchased for a minimum of period of 5 days and can extend up to a year. If the duration extends more than a year, you can renew the travel medical insurance plans for about 36 months at a time. Spouse, children and other dependents are also eligible to be covered under the short term international insurance plan.

Medical expenses incurred due to surgeries, emergency repatriation, hospitalization and doctor consultation are covered by short term international medical insurance plans. In addition, routine check-ups, dental treatments, preventive care tests and vaccinations are also not covered. Traveling to another country was traditionally so full of uncertainties and danger, that insurance was invented to safeguard some of those assets that were traded. While many of us still travel for business, we also travel extensively for pleasure. If anything, that has increased the rationale for travel insurance.

Tensions are prone to be high during travel overseas, and international travel insurance protects the plan holder against some of the unexpected factors that may interfere with a trip—schedule changes and illnesses during the trip, for example. Usually, international travel insurance and trip insurance are purchased to protect against changes in the schedule and medical issues when traveling.

One of the most important advantages of travel insurance is the medical benefits package of an insurance plan. Medical emergencies during international travel can destroy a trip and burn a huge hole in the pocket. Your itinerary will also probably have to be somewhat rescheduled. Only with international travel medical insurance can you hope to defray these unexpected costs.

Travel insurance usually covers inpatient and outpatient care, accidental death or dismemberment, and emergency evacuation. Depending on the schedule of benefits, medical costs related to automobile accidents, and trip interruption due to illness or personal emergencies in the home country can also be covered.

Trip insurance also offers non-medical benefits for the international traveler. Typically, international travel is booked several months before the actual travel, and is dependent on several factors. It follows that there are several occurrences—maybe the death of a close family member, or the destruction of the primary home because of a flood— that might result in the trip being cancelled, and trip insurance can help reimburse for non- refundable costs.

When booking an international trip, costs can quickly add up, and the prudent traveler looks for the best deals well in advance. Unfortunately, this also means that most of these expenses are non- refundable. Trip insurance provides a host of options to protect yourself against nasty shocks in case your schedule changes.

How many times have you seen bad weather closing down airport services? Hurricanes are known to shut down airports in many places, and travel insurance covers the costs arising out of weather-related factors shutting down all travel services. cIf you want to insure against the cancellation of your trip, several trip cancellation insurance options, including “Cancel for Work” and “Cancel for Any Reason” coverage are available.

Your travel insurance will probably also cover you for lost baggage; and in case you require some legal advice, assist you with finding legal services. Assault and identity theft also find a place in the schedule of benefits of some plans.
