Many couples celebrate Valentines day but why not try something different and head abroad for a romantic gift idea. The destination will naturally depend on your budget and the time you have available but the possibilities are endless. For couples on a budget, why not look closer to home where many special breaks can still be found.
Choose carefully though as you may find that you have picked the wrong location and give out the opposite impression! You know what they say, ‘you can take them out of the city, but you can’t take the city out of them’, and the same is true of those from the countryside; which is why it’s important to consider where your loved one’s heart desires.. Having said this, it’s always nice to have a change of scenery and experience somewhere new.
In the United Kingdom there are so many impressive locations; a castle in Scotland or Ireland with a four-poster bed; roaring fire; fabulous food and nearby water features such as lakes, are great options. On a smaller scale, what about the beautiful Cotswolds or Yorkshire Dales or Moors? After all Wuthering Heights is a harrowing tale of love that’s testiment to such a location. The British coastline is wondrous to behold and when long walks along the shore beckon, who can resist?
Further afield, Europe has much to offer and with cheap and easy travel is suitable for a weekend or longer break. No doubt, Paris is a real favourite for lovers, but beyond the beaten track lies small towns and villages full of charm. The accommodation and food is cheaper away from the big cities and the feel is more intimate and friendly. The Loire is a huge river and there are many beautiful chateaux nestled amongst fabulous vineyards where wine and food are fit for the gods and pretty chambre dh´te surround you with gorgeous antiques and a romantic feel. After all, France is considered the place for lovers!
Travel a little further and one has the delights of Italy; Rome, Florence, Tuscany, the Italian Lakes, and of course Venice! Verona boasts Juliets balcony and lovers can leave a letter of love tucked into the wall beneath. The architecture and history surrounding you at every turn makes Italy a really special place to go. The winding streets and tiny bridges of Venice feel as if they belong in an old painting and the quintessential gondolas are charming. Add to this the wonderful food and wine and the exuberance of the Italian people and one cannot fail to be charmed.
Eastern Europe has a totally different feel and brings new experiences and cultures. How about the charm of medieval Prague or the amazing Trans-Siberia railway? Lake Bled, Dubrovnik or St. Petersburg: they all sound a world away from humdrum everyday life and will not fail to delight even the most jaded traveller. There is an abundance of different sights and experiences to be found here and a lifestyle reminiscent of a gentler time where life goes by more slowly, and is less demanding. After all, it is hard to feel romantic when exhausted after a stressful day!
The Greek islands hold a charm all of their own and a cruise, or taking a ferry between them is the perfect way to see them. What history and culture lie therein and of course, the weather is usually warm too. Greek people are friendly and hospitable and even though the language is impossibly difficult, the food is brilliant and the pace of life is a wonderful backdrop to a romantic break.
The total opposite would be a trip to Lapland and a stay in the renowned Ice Hotel. It might be cold but what lover wouldnt enjoy snuggling up beneath warm furs after drinking vodka from an ice mug after having seen that most amazing natural phenomenon: The Northern Lights. Could anything be more magical than that? Add to all this a ride in a horse or husky-drawn sleigh and who could fail to be impressed?
Over the pond in the land of our American cousins there is such diversity that there is a place to suit everyone. From busy New York to amazing Los Vegas and The Grand Canyon, San Francisco, Florida and Disney World, New Jersey, California; the list goes on and on. This is not to mention the Caribbean Islands where the sea and sky are blue, the sand is white and the atmosphere is lively but relaxed at the same time.
Hopefully this has provided you with plenty of ideas for romantic getaways, however, if you’ve left it a bit late to book anthing this year, don’t forget that your own home-sweet-home can be transformed into a romatic setting too! close the curtains, dim the lights and put some candles on the table. throw together a home-cooked meal and a bottle of vino, and you’ll have the romantic location sorted.. So, what’s your delay?? Get out there and enjoy it! Oh yeah,. don’t forget the camera!
